Thomas J. Potter was elected the new commander of the James E. Coffey Post 3 at the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 1992.
Potter is a retired US Army Vietnam veteran having served 22 years, attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.
A native Texan, Tom was born in Seminole Texas in 1929. He joined the Army in 1948 while attending college in Alpine Texas. Tom met and married his wife Eleanore while he was assigned to duty at Fort Devens, Mass.
Tom joined the James E. Coffey Post in 1968, shortly after returning from Vietnam. He was on the rifle team for many years and has also served as Service Officer, Chairman of the House Committee, and Chairman of the Boys State Committee for over 15 years. He was also Chairman of the Department Boys State Committee for many years. He received the American Legion Certificate of Distinction from the National Americanism Commission for Meritorious Service for his Boys State activities. He has been a convention delegate for many years.
