Over the course of a long and illustrious summer, the Coffey Post 3 baseball team rolled over one opponent after another with a multi-faceted display of baseball acumen.
Great pitching? You bet. Three guys as good as anyone in the state. Hitting, you say? This team was explosive. When it didn't get you early, it got you late. There were no soft spots in the Coffey lineup. Defense? Are you kidding? The nine kids in manager Mike Dionne's starting lineup played as if they were born with baseball gloves affixed to the proper appendages.
But one thing worried Dionne going into the American Legion State Tournament at Holman Stadium. How would his team react in a close game? It hadn't had much practice. It hadn't been asked to do the little things it takes to manufacture a run against a tough pitcher in a close game.
No need to worry. When he needed it, it was there. In wrapping up the state title Wednesday night as an unbeaten team in a double-elimination tournament. Coffey displayed the kind of guile it might need in the regionals next week in Brewer, Maine. Nashua handled adversity in last night's clinching 3-2 victory over Post 79 of Manchester.
So it's on to the regionals, and Dionne said his team won't be happy just to be there. Nashua walked away with all the big trophies. Hill, who surrendered just two runs and eight hits in 17 innings, was named the outstanding pitcher of the tournament, while Coy, who hit .380 with six RBI's was the outstanding player. Dionne carried off the biggest piece of hardware, the state championship trophy, which, no doubt, will get a prominent place back at the Post.
