GREENWOOD – The late Kevin DeGarmo of Greenwood had a dream of seeing a Memorial Circle be built in the Greenwood Cemetery that would recognize all branches of the military.
After his death in April, DeGarmo’s wife, Jan took on his dream of seeing the project be done.
“We’d be at the cemetery on Memorial Day and Kevin would always say how neat he thought it would be if there were flags around the war memorial,” DeGarmo said.
“He had a dream of putting up an American flag, and then have flag poles around it, one for each of the four branches of service.”
She knew the project would be a costly one, so went to Greenwood’s Legion Auxiliary Post 173 to see if they were interested.
“They thought it would be a good project,” she said.
Fundraising plans began but at the first fundraiser, selling PartyLite candles, the Auxiliary saw the majority of the money being raised.
She said that they could now look at a better quality of flagpoles.
Even though they have no big fundraising projects planned at this time, she said people could still donate money.
Money, earmarked that it should be used for the Memorial Circle, can be sent to Mary Weston, Auxiliary Treasurer, 645 E. 6th Street, Greenwood, NE 68366.
“We now have a drawing of an idea on how it would look,” DeGarmo said. “And it really looks good.”
She added that seeing it on paper made it more real to her.
“I’m just so excited and happy about it,” she said.
DeGarmo is hoping to see the project done by Memorial Day 2010 when the Legion would dedicate the circle.
“Kevin really thought it would be cool to do this, but just never got it done,” DeGarmo said.
“But his last wish is being fulfilled thanks to the community.”
