During 2021, in what was called "Veterans Week", the Mercer American Legion Auxiliary held a flag retirement ceremony in conjunction with Veterans Day activities. The ceremony was held at the North Mercer School. Students were in attendance and the ladies told and showed the students how to properly dispose of old, worn flags that should no longer be displayed.
The American Legion Post in Mercer, with the assistance of the North Mercer School, collects unusable flags year-round for disposal. Flags can be left at the school anytime during normal business hours, usually 8AM to 4PM. The flags will be kept at the school until a flag retirement ceremony is held and then they will be disposed of properly.
