The Warrensburg, Missouri post was chartered in August 1920 as the Charles E.Matthews Post 131. Matthews was the first soldier from the Warrensburg area to lose his life in WW I as he was killed in action on the battlefield in France. Following World War II, the post was renamed the Matthews-Crawford Post 131 and was re-chartered in September, 1946 in honor of Russell Crawford. Again the honor was bestowed upon the first area man to lose his life while serving in war time. Crawford, a U.S. Navy member lost his life in the Pacific Theater. Warrensburg has a rich tradition of sending their young men and women into battle. At least 38 known citizens served in the Spanish American War and over 160 in World War I. The city has erected a monument in recognition of those citizens of Johnson County who have gave their life in the defense of their country. In current day, Warrensburg provides a home for many of the Airmen and Soldiers who are assigned to nearby Whiteman AFB. In addition the Missouri State Veterans Home-Warrensburg is located a mile away from the post and it receives great support from Post 131 members.
