American Legion Post 296, in Ellendale, MN, was the third and final Legion post to be founded in Steele County. 

Fifteen Ellendale veterans gathered together on October 14, 1919 to formally request a charter from the American Legion. They chose to name their new post “Fidelity,” a representation of their shared loyalty and faith to their cause. A little over a week later, on October 22, the men received a temporary charter (pictured) and officially became American Legion Post 296.

In early December, the held its organizational meeting. The men elected Arthur Jansen to be their first post commander.
