Comments by Commander Duane “Bud” Redepenning concerning Planning and Building Committee which he appointed, and the work they accomplished. Before 1972 Post 102 was expanding in both business and membership. In August of 1972 the new incoming Commander, Bud Redepenning, appointed a Planning and Building Committee, they were: Jerry Snell [Chair], Ken Berghorst, Jack Hiltz, Jim George, and Glenn Barrott.
The committee background represents: attorney, realtor, architect, and building contractors.
The first couple years the committee discussed the Post’s future needs. Future needs: should we relocate, should we expand at our present location, how do we raise money? Just to raise money or do anything was a tough sell early on.
The committee kept plugging along. We discussed many properties as they came on the market. An example of some proposals: the creamery building on fourth avenue, vacant land in northwest Anoka, a turnkey offer in east Anoka, the Pease newspaper property on Jackson, the Tea House property on east 169. As these came on the market they were looked at discussed etc, some several times.
The final record states, Jack Hiltz proposed a new addition of 11,800 square feet, at an estimated cost of $365,000. The city of Anoka approved the plans October 23,1984. Later some items were added to the plans, such as an elevator, with final cost being $564.623.
The mortgage was paid off on September 26, 1997.
