Lawson Knowles of Carson City American Legion Post 380 will be cited saturday at the American Legion convention in Detroit as one of five outstanding post service officers in the Michigan Department.

Knowles, a Legionnaire since 1919, is community service officer for the post and has been chairman of memorial services here for 18 years. He was Montcalm county veterans'counselor from 1946. A former member of Ionia Post 37, he joined the Carson City veterans' group in 1943.

Knowles is widely known throughout the Ionia-Montcalm area as chaplain at military funeral services, and officiated at many of the rites for World War II veterans who were brought back for burial in 1947, 1948 and 1949.
