Walter Campbell, Jr., Named
2019 Legionnaire of the Year
A large group of veterans from the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American Legion and Post 2188 John F. Glass VFW visited with Walter D. Campbell, Jr., at a special award ceremony held at the Nemasket Healthcare Center on Marion Road in Middleborough in early January.
Walter, seen sitting in the center, was the recent recipient of congratulations for receiving the 2019 Massachusetts American Legion’s highest honor, “Legionnaire of the Year.” Sitting on Walter’s right is longtime friend Russell Pittsley a 99 year-old WW2 Army veteran. Standing directly behind Walter is Post 64 Finance Officer Mary Standish. On his left is James Cadorette a high school friend of Walter’s.
State Representative Norman Orrall, representing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, attended and offered complimentary comments concerning Walter’s Legion’s accomplishments. Post 64 Commander Bob Lessard served as master of ceremonies for the event. Commander Lessard read highlights of Walter’s Legion history, which dated back to 1937 as a young bugler with Post 64 drum corps.
Walter had been recommended for the state’s highest honor earlier during 2019 by Commander Lessard, Adjutant Eric Goodnow and Finance Officer Mary Standish.
