Memorial Day 2019 was one to remember, as the Middlborough Veterans Council arranged for a special display of the Mount Rushmore and World War2 flags to conclude the annual parade and observances at Memoiral Park.

The flags, which are under the care of Halifax resident Mark Valentine, each measure 90-feet from end to end, and when unfurled with the help of the large crowd gathered for this year's festivities, they covered a good portion of the front lawn of the Middleborough Town Hall.

Bob Lessard, a member of the Veterans Council an Commander of Middleborough American Legion Post 64, says the flags were presented this year to mark the 350th anniversary of the Town of MIddlebprough and the 100th Anniversary of the Middleborough American Legion.

He says arrangements to bring the flags to town took some time, but last spring around this time he was able to to secure a reservation with Valentine, who's traveled around the globe with the pair of flags.

While the flags look to be exact matches, the World War 2 flag has 48 stars.

Visit SouthCoastToday.com/Gazette for a full photo galleery-of the parade, observances at Veterans Memorial Park and the unfurling of the flags.

(Note: Editor Haglof and Commander Lessard photographed the flag display from within the bucket of the Middleborough Fire Dept ladder truck.  The bucket had been hoisted to 58 feet for a spectacular view of the flags. The Gazette posted three colorful pages of the parade, Memorial Day ceremony and the flag unfurling.)
