Residents of Middleboro learned of the passing of United States Army Corporal George Robert Huxley while reading the February 14,1947 edition of the Gazette. His death notice stated,"ln Middleboro, February 10, George Robert Huxley, aged 27 years, one month, six days, at his home, 80 Arch Street..."

George R. Huxley had joined the Army as an enlistee on January 6, L94O in Bhode lsland, where he was initially assigned to the 10th Coast Artillery stationed at Fort Adams. Several other Middleboro served with him in Rhode lsland. They were Private First Class P. Gasunas, Sergeant, A Gasunas and Corporals H. G. Mitchelland M. Maleski.

Next he was posted to Panama for nearly three years, where he contracted Yellow F€ver, while serving as a military police officer until September 1943.

He returned to the United States and was transfered to Fort Brag& North Carolina. tle saw duty at MP Headquarters at City Hall in Wilmington, N.C. in October 1943, He also served on regular train duty policing the ride from North Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia until he was taken ill.

An article in the January 12th, 1945 publication of the Gazefie was headlined "Corporal Huxley Seriously lll." The story informed the reader that his mother; Mrs. Bella Huxley and his sister Mrs. Chester Wright had visited George in the Nonhington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

According to his mother, George had an operation for a brain tumor and was considered in serious condition. Mrs. Huxley was quoted in the Gazette praising the wonderful care her son was gefiing at the hospital by the doctors and nurses.'

Corporal Huxley was discharged from the Army Medical Center under a Certificate of Disability by headquarters at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. on June 24,1945,

The Armyt discharge enlisted record for George revealed that he earned an American Defense Service Medalwith one bronze star; an American Theatre Medal and a Good Conduct medal. His Honorable Discharge was issued the rters Detachment Section One Military Police at Fort Bragg, N.C George Robert Huxley was born on January 4, t9?0 in Middleboro to William and lsabel (Pedro) Huxley of 80 Arch Street. He attended Middleboro Schools, although research failed to find him listed in Memorial Hieh School.

He was survived by his motheL a sister Eileen Wright and a brother Francis. Funeral Services were conducted from the Fahey Funeral Home on Thursday, February 13. A military High Mass was held at Sacred Heart Church followed by internment in 5t. Maryt Cemetery where military honors were rendered.

George was a member of both the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American Legion and the John Glass Post 21"88 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, whose representatives attended.
