Twenty-one year old Edward Manning Sylvia, a United States Navy Seaman First Class reservist, succumbed to medical problems on September 26,7947. He had been receiving treatment at the Newport Naval Hospital in Rhode lsland for ten months prior to his passing. Navy officials notified his parents of his death.
Edward, who had joined the Navy on September t6, L943 as a 17 year-old during World War 2. According to published reports, he had been medically discharged from active dury on August 8, X945. Upon discharge he was placed into the Naval Reserves.
He was born in Middleboro on September X., 1925. The son of Oak Street residents John V. and Daisy {Farnum} Sylvia, he had attended Middleboro schools while growing up. He was barely seventeen when he volunteered to join the Navy.
While on active duty, he served aboard Merchant Marine ships, which were supplying our forces over$eas during the World War. The ships were comprised of tankers, troop carriers and cargo ships, which were highly sought for sinking on the high seas by the enemy. Edward served as an armed guard aboard several of these ships during ocean crossings to Europe and around the U.S. coastline.
He was a rnemher of the Mitchell Club and after discharge he joined Middleboro's Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64, American Legion. He also was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church.
Besides his parents, he left four brothers: John F. Sylvia of Green Spring, Florida, who was serving as a Chief Pefiy Officer; Ernest J., Manual Victor, and Charles S, all of Middleborq also, a sister Mrs, Lawrence Carver.
Funeral services were held at the Egger Funeral Home, followed by a Hlgh Mass of Requiem at $acred Heart Church. Burial with full military honors was in the family plot on Avenue A in the Nemasket Hill Cemetery.
