Busy Weekend for Honor Guard

It was a busy weekend for the members of the Middleboro Veterans Honor Guard as on Friday, September 21, the unit rendered honors for a Middleboro resident and Army veteran, who was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Two United States Army representatives were present to fold the flag and offer our country’s condolences to the survivor’s family. The honor Guard provided a flag detail, firing squad and bugler.

On Saturday, the 22nd, our Honor Guard was present to post the flags as Rolling Thunder Ma. Chapter 2 hosted a ride honoring Korean War Veterans. The fund raising event started and ended at the John Glass, Jr., Post 2188 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars parking lot. Funds from the proceeds will go to furthering the group’s mission of assisting local veterans in need.

Over a half dozen Korean War Veterans were recognized and introduced by Michelle Hamilton, president of the local group. Post 64 members recognized for their Korean War Service were Walter Campbell, Jr., and Norman Record. Bill Oliver, also a Korean War veteran, realized his paperwork hadn’t been processed in a timely fashion. He will gain official recognition in the near future, according to Ms. Hamilton.

On Sunday, the 23rd, the Honor Guard again was involved in posting the colors at the opening ceremony of the 13th Annual New England Blues Festival.

This event was staged at the Middleboro Elks’ field. The festival is hosted by the Free Bird Times and Karen Blair. The monthly paper’s bright red headline said: “Thank You For Your Service.”
