DOUBLE DUTY:-Middleboro’s annual Crazy Days events held throughout the downtown area was held on Friday/Saturday, August 10 & 11.  Streets were closed to vehicular traffic as vendors and various volunteer groups displayed their wares.

The town’s two veterans’ organizations took advantage of the visiting crowds. At the suggestion of Gerard J. Milch, Commander of the John F. Glass, Jr., Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2188 in conjunction with the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American Legion, a unique recruitment table was set up in front of the Legion building.

Richard “Tex” Washburn and Bill Oliver, whom are members of both Posts, manned the table. On Saturday, Washburn distributed printed material for both groups and interacted with individuals who inquired about membership.

In fact, “Tex” was photographed wearing the two different hats and passing out applications for both Posts during the day. He was pictured in the Thursday, August 16, 2018 edition of the Middleboro Gazette on page B3 wearing a VFW hat and holding that organization’s paperwork. The photo headline stated "Spreading the word at Krazy Days."

“We had several interested people leave their names,” said Washburn. Legion Commander Bob Lessard remarked, “We thought that Crazy Days was an excellent opportunity to try and recruit veterans. Being a dual member, “Tex” was an excellent person for the job.”(Photo and posting by Historian Bob Lessard.)
