From South Coast Today. With plans for a $1.2 million dollar redesign in 2020, one local person is taking the opportunity to make sure the right people are aware Everett Square is technically John Glass Square.
Bob Lessard, American Legion Post 64 Commander and Historian, has been advocating for close to 10 years that the Town of Middleboro officially change the name of Everett Square to John Glass Jr. Square in honor of the World War 1 veteran killed in action in 1918.
"The poor guy got neglected and you don't do that to a veteran." said Lessard.
According to Lessard and his historical records, on May 30, 1929, as part of Memorial Day Services, Everett Square was dedicated to John F. Glass, Jr. There is currently a plaque in the square in his honor. It is also interesting to note that on the same day, Town Hall Avenue was dedicated and renamed to Nickerson Ave. in honor of Sgt Simeon L. Nickerson.
"That stuck!" said Lessard, referencing Nickerson Ave but..."for some reason people just keep saying Everett Square, they never took it to heart."
At a special town meeting held June 18, 1929, a vote passed that officially remamed Everett Square as John John Glass Square. The legal name for the square is Glass. The current plan for the square should include signage acknowledging the renaming." Lessard said. Here is the language from the June 18th, 1929 town meeting article:
"Article 23: To see if the town will vote to change the name of Everett Square to John Glass, Jr Square and act thereon; agreeable to the petition of Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64. Voted: that wishing to honor the honorable service and supreme sacrifice during the World War of a young man and citizen of the town, the name of Everett Square be changed to John Glass, Jr Square."
There is brief story about John F. Glass in the timeline dated July 23, 2015.
