A former Middleboro resident, William "Bill" Nickerson, who has been living in the Sarasota, FL area since retiring from a US Navy career in 1974, celebrated his 87th birthday on March 25th.

Nickerson, a member of Middleboro'a American Legion Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 served aboard a host of Navy ships including the carrier Essex. His career of 20 years saw service during the Korean and Viet Nam wars.

He lived at 41 East Main St (Star Mills) while growing up in Middleboro. He left in 1950 to join the Navy. He completed 2 voyages around the world, traveling through the Suez and Panama Canals. In 1954, he left the Navy to live in Sarasota, where he worked in the press room for the now defunct Sarasota News.

In 1958 he re enlisted in the Navy, retiring in 1974 to Sarasota. He originally joined the American Legion Post in Sarasota until he transferred his membership to Post 64 in Middleboro. "I am the grand-nephew of Simeon L. Nickerson and decided I should at least be a member of the named after him."

He still resides in Sarasota with his constant companion, Roxie, a 4 year old rescue dog.
