............Members of Middleboro’s Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American Legion conducted the group’s annual coffee stop over the 2017 Labor Day weekend for Rte 495 holiday travelers. The coffee stop normally runs for four days, starting on Friday, September 1 through Labor Day, but heavy winds and rain caused cancellation of the Sunday date.

......Plenty of American Legion signage announced the free coffee stop at East and West bound parking areas for Cape Cod motorists.

......The coffee stop is basically a “safe driving-take a break” initiative. Post 64 members have been holding this event for many years. Not only are free cups of coffee offered, including iced, but donuts, other pastries and cold drinks are offered free of charge to the traveling public.

......This "drive-safe" program is well thought of by the public. Even more impressive was the thank you received from patrolling State troopers, who stopped, not for coffee, but to thank the coffee staffers for promoting safe driving.

......Among the volunteers for the 2017 event were several members of Rolling Thunder, who were helping for the second year.

......One surprise visitor was Dick McMahon, Commander of Massachusetts District 10. He remarked, “This is a nice way to get people to take a break from driving as they head to and from Cape Cod.”

......Among the Post 64 coffee stop volunteers were Tex Washburn, Dave Singer, Bill Oliver, Kevin Maher, Bob Lessard, Paul Provencher, Paul Kreitzberg,Eric Goddnow, Jeff Montelo, Russ Pittsley, Walter Campbell, Wayne Packard, Jim Cadorette and Barry Schuster,Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 64.

......The Middleboro Gazette ran a half page of photographs in its Thursday, September 7 edition about the event. (Posted by Bob Lessard, Post 64 Historian.)
