ENTERING SERVICE:-Six Middleboro High School graduates, who are entering military service, were recognized at a Flag Day ceremony last Wednesday, June 14. The event was held in the Wayne M. Caron auditorium before an audience of their peers, administration, parents and a contingent of the Middleboro Veterans Honor Guard.
A newly created wall mural of the American flag has been placed in the main lobby entrance of the high school. Above the mural are the individual logos of the United States military branches. Five of the students, assisted by family members, posted their senior class photographs above the mural to the applause of event witnesses.
Posting their pictures were Bailey Sullivan, Mitchell Lamoureux and Caitlin Steinberg, who are all entering the United States Air Force; Charles Browning, United States Army; and Kevin Donohoe, United States Navy. Missing from the ceremony was Bruce Pina, who will be serving with the United States Army.
The pictures will remain on the mural wall for the entire time the six remain in the service. It was expressed by many in attendance that the new high school will include a similar mural.
Prior to the placement of the photographs, the high school body observed Flag Day ceremonies led by Principal Paul Branigan.
Brian E. Lynch, school superintendent, welcomed the students to the Wayne M. Caron auditorium and spoke about our country’s Medal of Honor history. He mentioned how there are fewer than 3,500 recipients of the Medal of Honor in the entire history of our country. And, he pointedly remarked that Wayne was one of that group. He also expressed hope that the new high school will contain a Wayne Caron auditorium.
Principal Branigan then called upon the Middleboro Veterans Honor Guard led by Bruce Wright to post the colors. The Middleboro High School Chorus then sang the National Anthem, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Retired Army Officer Charles Perenick served as guest speaker. He thanked the six students who have joined the service and offered guiding advice to the entire student body.
