…………….MIDDLEBORO:- Bob Lessard, Commander of the Simeon L. Nickerson American Legion Post 64, is pleased to announce that Middleborough High School students Ian Gilson, Eric Jacobson and Jack Andrade and Apponequet High School students Cameron Silva and Matthew Lewis will be attending Boys State.Also, the Ladies Auxiliary will be sending local students Courtney Chane and Megan Hurley to Girls State.
………..At these week-long events, the students will learn about local and state government. All attendees are encouraged to run for one of the many offices. US Senator, Governor, Mayor are a few of the offices. After the elections on Sunday evening they run their towns for the rest of the week.
………..Students who are elected Senator will go to Washington DC to participate in Boys/Girls Nation, at which time they will get to meet the President of the United States.
………..Special thanks goes out to Tom Calter, Keiko Orall and Susan GIffords for their participation in the annual State Legislative Boys’ State Scholarship. Both past President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton attended these programs while in High School.
………..The attendees for the Student Trooper program have also been selected: Brianna Alden, Olivia Benson, MacKenzie Jones and Cody Soderlund will be representing Post 64 this year.
………..The program is held at the Massachusetts State Police training facility. The program is intended for those students who are interested in participating in law enforcement after graduation. Training is provided by the same cadre that trains the Massachusetts State Police officers. After the first day and a half of physical training the focus changes to the study of law enforcement.
……….Several of our local police officers have attended the Student Trooper program.
