Legionnaires of Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American Legion conducted their annual Free Coffee rest stop event on Route 495 over the Labor Day weekend. Travelers driving to and from Cape Cod were able to take a driving break by stopping for a free coffee, donuts and pastries from Friday, August 29 through Monday, September 1, 2014.
Post Commander Jeff Montelo said, “This is a good project for the Post. The members are able to communicate with the traveling public and are able to promote the American Legion.”
“We have seen a steady stream of visitors, who stopped for coffee and goodies. Plus, it gave the travelers an opportunity to stretch their legs,” remarked Commander Montelo. “Our donation jars were prominently placed and gathered many dollars.”
Russ Pittsley, 94, a World War 2 veteran and Post 64 member, was delighted to meet a motorcyclist who was a Persian Gulf War veteran. The younger veteran was wearing a unique POW cycle helmet. He briefly spoke with Russ about his military experiences and allowed the elder vet the opportunity to sit on his Harley. (See the photo gallery section.Filed by Bob Lessard.
