..........MIDDLEBORO:-Adrian Poponesset Haynes, 88, of Middleboro passed on Saturday, April 26

2014 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Plymouth following complications from kidney problems.

........The long time Middleboro resident, who resided at Riverview Senior Housing, was a

member of the Wampanoag tribe and a WW2 Navy veteran. Born in Mashpee on February 28, 1926, he

was the son of the late Clinton Mye Haynes and Daisy F. Mingo. He was the brother of the late

Clinton, Jr., Vernon, and Tisquantum, Violet, Anita, Rita, Naomi and Nickomas.

.......He is survived by a sister Daisy of Washington,D.C. and several nieces and nephews.

Adrian was a Chief of the Wampanoags and was known as Chief Silver Beech.

.......Throughout his life he would answer to various names: “Poppon” as a young man and in

later years as Abe and “Chief.” The Middleboro Gazette published on December 5, 2013

highlighted Adrian on its front page with an article and photograph. The newspaper story told

of his family, military history and veteran activities, which listed his membership in the

Veterans of Foreign Wars John Glass Post 2188, American Legion Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 and

with the Disabled American Veterans Cpl. William F. Reardon Chapter 57 of Taunton.

.......During his naval service, Adrian earned the European Theater ribbon, American Theater

ribbon, World War 2 Victory medal and the Good Conduct medal. He served four years and saw

action at Anzio transporting troop and supplies to shore, while assigned to the Naval Supply

Depot out of Oran, Algeria.

.......A memorial service was held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Middleboro

Veterans Memorial Park, where military honors were rendered. Representatives of the Mashpee

Wampanoag tribe led by Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell attended the memorial.

.......After the memorial service, a gathering was held at the VFW John Glass Post 2188 hall to

celebrate Mr. Haynes life. Later in the afternoon, there was an internment service at the Old

Indian Church Cemetery, Meeting House Road in Mashpee, where the Middleboro Veterans Council

Honor Guard offered a 21 gun salute.
