……………………………………….SPECIAL TO STANDARD – TIMES-MIDDLEBORO: -Nine bands, screaming sirens and

blasts from air horns sparked Middleboro’s observance of Veterans Day, as the American Legion

sponsored parade caught up with itself with more than 8, 000 spectators applauding.

………More than fifty units were led by Fletcher Clark, Jr., first Commander of Simeon L.

Nickerson Post 64, and Parade Marshall of the annual event for the past 30 years.

……..Five judges selected awarded prizes for marching groups, commercial vehicles, floats along

with many honorable mentions. Judging the parade were: Mrs. Thelma Goodwin, president of

Degree Pocahontas; Mrs. Dorothy Massey of East Middleboro 4-H Clubs; Town Manager, Thomas R.

Nutting and Mrs. Claire Rockwood and Clinton Clark, reporters.

…….Overall first prize for floats went to the Firemen’s Auxiliary float depicting American

freedom through World Wars 1 and 2, the Korean conflict and the current fighting in Vietnam.

The Junior Cabot Club of Middleboro was awarded second for floats.

…….Following the parade a ceremony was held on the Town Hall lawn highlighting the 46th

observance of Veterans Day. William McMahon, Jr., and John D. Roclwell, Jr., co-chairs with

Simeon L. Nickerson Post 65, made the arrangements.

……Mr. Clark spoke briefly at the ceremony. Rev. Paul J. West gave the invocation and Rev.

Robert K. Rice the benediction. The Middleboro High School Band played “The Star Spangled
