…………… Middleboro’s Simeon L. Nickerson Post’s Legionnaires Rifle and Pistol team finished
third last month in league standings after the final shootoff in the Twin County League
against the Taunton Police Club. The matches were fired at the Satucket Rifle and Revolver
Club in East Bridgewater.
……….Shooting for the Legion top scorers were W. Cobbett with top team points of 276; W. Savary
shot 263; D. Bowles scored 260; N. Briggs and J. Thomas tied for fourth place 259. All
matches are conducted under qualification rules of the National Rifle Association.
……….Home matches in the Twin County League are held at the home ranges of the Acushnet Rifle
and Pistol Club; the East Bridgewater Satucket Club; Taunton Police Pistol Team; Yankee Pistol
Teams No. 1 and of New Bedford; the Hayward Club of Taunton and the Clear Pond Rifle and
Pistol Club.
……..The Middleboro Legion Rifle and Pistol Club hold their matches at the range in the
basement of Town Hall. The club also holds weekly target practice on Wednesdays in the same
location.
……..The annual banquet and award night for league members provides a venue for top shooters to
gain recognition and trophies. Held at the Golden Spur in Lakeville, the banquet provided
bragging rights to winning teams. More than 120 participants attended the banquet.
………Satucket with an 12-2 record won the championship and took the top award, and, also
retired the plaque donated by Steve’s Sports Den of Middleboro for winning the title three
times. Middleboro Legion closed with a record of 11-4 for third spot in the standings. It was
the first time that the Legion marksmen finished out of first or second place.
…….. Individual awards were presented: John Thomas of Middleboro American Legion earned the
most improved shooter in the club and Don Bowles captured an award for best average with 90.1
per cent in the Legion group. Certificates were presented for Expert, Sharpshooter and
Marksmanship to many of those attending.
………Taunton Police Chief John A. Bobola, Middleboro Police Chief William Gardiner and East
Bridgewater Police Chief Walter Benoit and Middleboro Board of Selectmen Chairman Rudolphus P.
Alger were head table guests.
……. Chief Bobola was served as main speaker. He told the group that this was his third time
attending the Twin County League banquet. He congratulated the group for its successful season
