…………….In what may have been a “first” for Middleboro’s Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 American
Legion, husband and wife Joseph S. and Madeline D’Elia of 103 Pearl Street were elected for
1957 to head Post 64 and the Post Auxiliary, respectively.
…………… Both were installed on Thursday, September 26, 1957 at 8 p.m. to their respective
leadership assignments at a publicly held annual meeting of Post 64 at Town Hall auditorium.
……………District 10 Commander John F. Morton of Duxbury and his installation staff will officiate
at the swearing in of Commander D’Elia and other elected officers of Post 64. Mrs. Lillian
McDonald of Rockland, 10th District director, and Mrs. Barbara Reynolds, District Installing
Officer, are in charge of Auxiliary installations.
…………….Other Post 64 officials to be installed include: Roland Brule, senior-vice commander; M.
Eugene Gammons, junior-vice commander and assistant adjutant; William McMahon, Jr., adjutant;
Ralph Mendall, finance officer; Franklin G. Harlow, historian; the Rev. Francis Schlater,
chaplain; Ralph Beckman, sergeant-at-arms; and Lawrence Carver, Americanism officer.
……………..Also, Fletcher Clark, Jr., judge advocate; John Scanlon, athletic officer; Louis Cole,
service officer and Clifton McCrillis, assistant service officer.
……………..Auxliary officers inducted were: Madeline D’Elia, president; Mrs. Cora Anderson, senior-
vice president; Mrs. Alice Caswell, junior-vice president; Mrs Minnie Dunham, secretary and
Mrs. Mrytle Broadbent, treasurer.
……………Carlton Leland will be at the piano for the installation ceremonies and entertainment for
the evening will be by Walter Childs of Thompson Street, a magician, and Johnny Gasuna’s
