4 July 1956…..

……………It is estimated that over 12,000 persons jammed the terraced banks near Battis Field to

witness the American Legion Post 64 and Park Department c0-sponsored fireworks display.

………….Perfect weather brought record-breaking crowds to the parade at North Middleboro, to the

athletic events at the playground and the fireworks display. More children than ever before

entered the athletic events and more people watched the fireworks.

…………Police Chief Gardiner used more police help than any other time that he cold remember.

…………The co-sponsors indicated that for the first time in recent years profits from the food

booths would offset the expenses of the day. However, due to the cooler weather, the sale of

cold drinks was lower than in the past.

………..By 11 p.m., when the Chief and his augmented crew were enjoying coffee and doughnuts

supplied by a friend, volunteers were starting the after celebration cleanup.

……….The Legionnaires will have little rest.

………..Post 64 members are getting ready to sponsor their July 9-14th Carnival to be staged at

Elks Field. Rides will feature the ever popular merry-go-round, ferris wheel, chair swings and

a kiddie ride. Reduced rates for rides for children will occur on Saturday between 2 and 5 p.m.

……… Commander Eddie Crouse announced that there will be entertainment and fun for the whole

family...............( Posted by Bob Lessard Historian 2014.)
