Middleboro Gazette, May 3, 1951: LEGION HOST A GET-TOGETHER
.....Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64,the American Legion held its annual Get-Together at the Legion Hall Thursday night, April 26 with a good attendance.
.....The American Legion Auxiliary, under the direction of Mrs. Doris Horton, prepared and served a roast turkey supper. The tables were decorated with spring flowers. Alfred Hotin played the piano during the supper hour and later for group singing.
.....The invocation was offered by Chaplain Maynard Hall. Commander John Rockwell made the welcoming remarks and introduced the guest of the evening: Commander Allan M. Hale, Assistant District Attorney;Past Commander Kenneth B. Keedwell, Civil Defense Director; Comrade Roger W. Macdonald, Town Manager; Comrade Ralph Maddigan,Jr., Chairman of Selectmen; Comrade Rhodolphus P. ALger, Selectman; Selectmen Ralph E. Nourse, William J. MacDougall and John A. Washburn.
.....Also, Past Department Commander Dr. John Hall; Captain Leo Curley, Commanding Officer of Battery A, 685th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion; William N. Sheehy, Acting Postmaster; Past Commander Fletcher Clark, Jr., President of the Middleborough Savings Bank; Comrade O.M. McGrath, secretary of the YMCA; and Past Commander Louis A. Cole, Director of Veterans Services Department of Middleboro.
…………Comrade Adnah H. Harlow served as master of ceremonies for the occasion. Eila Peltola offered several accordion selections. Sisco and Hastings, prize winners on the Horace Heidt Youth Opportunity Hour, performed their variety act. Quennie, the comedienne, was most amusing with her antics.
…………Athletic Officer John W. Scanlon awarded Junior Legion medals to Robert G. Brown as the best baseball player of the season, and Roger Nickerson, the best batter of the season having a batting average 0f 389.
………….Later, Scanlon named Bobby Brown, a three sport star at Middleboro High, as assistant coach of the Post’s Legion Junior baseball team. Brown was captain and shortstop of this year’s Middleboro High baseball team.
………….Commander Rockwell awarded Comrade Robert Goldstein, treasurer of the Plymouth Shoe Company, with a Citizenship Citation and Medal in recognition of his unusually fine service to the youthful baseball fans of Middleboro and surrounding communities.
………….The committee in charge was: Past Commander Franklin D. Harlow, Commander John Rockwell, Past Commander Clifton A. McCrillis, Past Commander Everett Saunders and Finance Officer Edward L. Shaw.
…………At the next regular meeting, May 7, the Post will hear first- hand information on the latest National Executive Committee meeting by National Committeeman Tracy Dibble. He will speak on the latest facts about Communism in the U.S.A. (Compiled By Bob Lessard Historian 2016)
