..............During the closing ceremonies of the Saturday, August 22 of the state convention in Holyoke, Dr. John H. Hall was elected as the new Commander of the Massachusetts Department of the American Legion on Saturday, reported the August 28, 1942 edition of the Middleboro Gazette.
......He had previously served two terms as Vice-Commander of the state organization.
Dr. Hall is the past commander of Middleboro’s Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64, which he headed in 1936-37.
......In Legion affairs he has served as Chairman of the state’s Defense Committee; Commander of the 10th District Council, which is comprised of Plymouth, Barnstable, Nantucket and Dukes counties; as Chef De Gare of the Plymouth Voiture, 40 and 8.
......At the local level he served as Commander of the Middleboro veterans Council. He also was named last January as the Commander of the aircraft warning service in Massachusetts. And, he serves as a Captain in the 25th Regiment of the Massachusetts State Guard.
......During the convention election campaign, Dr. Hall received plenty of support from his fellow post members, who were attending the convention as official delegates. They were Commander Reginald Drake, P.J. McMahon and William J. Begley. Also rendering additional support were three alternate delegates from Post 64: John F. Casey, Herve Tournigny and Fred M. Wright.
......Commander Hall, according to the Gazette article, received 318 votes, while James P. McManus of Roxbury attained 285 and Thomas A. Athridge garnered 138. Following the election, Dr. Hall headed the closing convention parade bringing the Holyoke four day convention to a close.
......The new state commander has served as dental surgeon at the State Farm in Bridgewater since 1933. And, for 12 years he was connected with the school dental clinic in New Bedford, where he practiced his profession. He returned from the First World War as lieutenant in the dental corps. He opened a dental office in Middleboro in 1932, according to the newspaper.
He formerly lived in Middleboro, but is now a current resident of Bridgewater.
