………………………….BROCKTON:- During the Department of Massachusetts state convention being held in Brockton, the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 of Middleboro was given great press coverage in the August 16, 1934 edition of the Brockton Enterprise.
…………… The story headline two columns wide read: “Nickerson Post, Middleboro, Has made Enviable Record” and the sub- headline below said: “Named for Townsman Killed in Action, the Post Has Sponsored Many Public Activities… Auxiliary Progressive.”
……………Two photos accompanied the article, which was five columns wide and nearly covered half a page. The pictures, under the headline: “Lead Middleboro Post, Auxiliary” displayed the pictures of Mrs. Amelia Fuller, head of Middleboro Auxiliary and that of Romeo Millette, Middleboro Post Commander.
…………The lengthy article gave a complete history of Post 64, from its inception on June 23, 1919 through to the convention in Brockton.
………..Nearly every aspect of Post 64 was covered including the above mentioned founding; election of officers, first fund raiser with the Labor Day Field Day, membership, the 1927 forming of the rifle club, sponsoring a Junior Legion baseball club in 1929, the naming of Nickerson Avenue and John Glass, Jr., Square and in 1933 the marking of graves of Legionnaires under the charge of comrade Louis Cole.
……….. Mentioned in the story was how Post 64 sponsored 4th of July activities. The Middleboro Post sponsored for the first time in 1933 a Sons of the Legion group with 27 charter members. Past Commanders were listed as well as present 1934 officers.
………..The Enterprise interviewed Mrs. Maude Skillings of the Auxiliary, who was described as “an active worker.” She told of an advertisement in the Middleboro Gazette of Friday, April 22, 1921, which asked “Wives, mothers, sisters, daughters of American Legion members to attend a meeting in Legion Hall, Monday evening, April 25 at 8 o’clock to hear why they should be a women’s auxiliary.”
……….It was on that date that the Post 64 Women’s auxiliary was formed as sixty women attended. Mrs. Nellie Nourse was named chairman and Mrs. Elizabeth Maddigan, secretary. A follow-up meeting was held on May 16 and Mrs. Alex Eaton was elected President with Mrs. Annie Keedwell as vice-president.
