January 5, 1934 …. With 25 members present, the meeting was called to order by Commander Romeo Millette at 8:30 p.m. An oyster supper was served by the Inside Entertainment committee at 7.pm… Supper cost $4.70 and receipts $4.70. Clifton McCrillis reported on the Sons of American Legion, while committee Secretary Saunders read a report. It was voted these outlines progressive and to file the report. Allen MacDonald, chairman of the Community Welfare committee, reported that 105 dinners were given out at Xmas and 216 children were remembered with toys. Treasurer of the committee Fred M. Wright reported that a sum of $94.63 was collected and there was a deficit of $18.43. It was voted that an article be inserted in the Town Warrant that a man be appointed from the American Legion to act as the Soldier’s Relief Officer. Also voted memberships to Comrades Eugene LaPlante and Horace Gamache for their untiring work shoveling snow from our roof after the heavy storm. Harry Scholfield was ordered to investigate need repairs to the gutters.
…February 5, 1934 ….Financial Officer’s report showed a balance of $90.00. Committee reports were heard and accepted from the Inside Entertainment, Veterans Night, Membership, Welfare and Son’s of the Legion. The roof marking committee for aviation declared progressive. H. Schofield’s report on roof repairs was accepted. Motion passed that the Post hold a Past-Commander’s night. Committee of Geo. I. Dunham, Frank Baker and Edgar Gay to make the arrangements.
… March 2, 1934 … The Post voted $25.00 for new equipment for the baseball team. Passed a motion to allow the Veterans of Foreign Wars the use of one our nights in the Town Hall on March 28th. It was voted that the 15th Birthday Celebration of the American Legion be on March 15th. The Inside Entertainment committee will provide the money necessary for the Celebration. Also voted that the Celebration be a strictly “HE” time. Before adjoining, it was voted that a Legislative Committee of three be appointed. This committee to be instructed to contact our State and National legislators when requested. Appointed were John McNeece, Clifton McCrillis and Charles Card. (The Middleboro Gazette has been publishing recently a weekly column on Post 64 activities written by “Legionnaire.”)
…April 2, 1934 … Meeting opened at 8:15 with 27 members present. It was voted to have Comrade Allan MacDonald continue the fine write-ups in the Gazette. Minutes from previous meeting and committee reports were accepted. Voted to purchase a ticket to the Charity Ball held by the Auxiliary in Worcester and to mail them $2.00. Post to hold a Poppy Drive on April 27th-28th if committee finds it will not conflict with the drive in May by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Post voted to donate one night to our rifle club for their supper. The Commander will investigate about holding a Fourth of July Celebration.
… May 7, 1934 … Regular business of committee and Officer reports. It was voted to pay the bill for a meal furnished a transient comrade. A second unfortunate Comrade appeared during the month and he was furnished lodging at the Y.M.C.A. and a meal. The Post paid this bill also. Past Commander Dunham reported the death of Comrade Frank J. Riley The Charter will be draped for a month in memory of Comrade Riley. It was voted to buy a screw driver. A vote to buy a coffee urn and to lock it up after use was approved and the bill of 24 cents be paid on the coffee urn. A nominating committee for officers for the ensuing year were elected. Meeting adjourned at 10:40 p.m.
… June 4, 1934 … Forty-two members were called to order by Commander Millette at 8:15 p.m. Voted to appropriate money to have the Charter of the Son’s of the Legion framed. Plans for the installation of the Son’s of the Legion were reported by Past Commander McCrillis with the event to be held on Friday, June 22, 1934. All bills for the installation will be paid by the Post. Nominations were made for next year’s officers. Elected as Commander, George I. Dunham; 1st Vice, Dr. John H. Hall; 2nd Vice, Francis Crowley; 3rd Vice, Freeman Taylor; Adjutant, Everett L. Saunders; Finance Officer, Harold L. Dunham; Chaplain, R.W. Drake; Historian, Allan A. MacDonald; Sgt. at Arms, Arthur S. Hall.
… July 2, 1934 … The trustees of the building discussed the report concerning the need of repairs to the building. Needed repairs for tenant Bay O’Toole. Cost of repairs will be reported to the Executive Committee and if it sees fit the work shall be done. Post voted to pay the cost of the telephone call made by the Commander to Winthrop for a firing squad. Comrade Cole has the authority hire Depot Grove for our carnival it was voted.
… August 6, 1934 …. A report from the Carnival Committee showed the success of the affair with the fact that $443.49 was the net profit. Comrade Cole was given authority to lease Depot Grove field for a year. The Post voted to the bill of $10.00 for the rent of the field. The Commander, it was voted, was to be reimbursed for his miscellaneous expenses of $1.80. The matter of remodeling our building to be left in the hands of the Commander. Motion passed that $25.00 to be given to each of the two delegates to the State Convention at Brockton. So voted.
… September 14, 1934 … Dr. John Hall gave a fine report as a delegate to the State Convention at Brockton. Second delegate P.J. McMahon was unable to attend our meeting so Dr. Hall made a complete report. Vice-Commander Wright also spoke on the Convention. Incoming Commander be instructed to appoint a committee of five to have complete charge of this year’s observance of Armistice Day. Passed a motion to order coal for the building from the three coal companies in town and the Finance Officer pay the balance of our coal bill.
… September 26, 1934 … INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS- About 100 members and guests were present, including the Post’s unit of the Son’s of the Legion. Commander Romeo Millette opened the meeting at 8 p.m. with the ritual. Acting Sgt. of Arms Joseph Dutra presented the flag as the members and guest to salute. Chaplain McCrillis read the invocation. The installing Staff was presented to Commander Harry T. Downes of the 10th District. The Staff consisted of Commander Downes, Hanover; Clarence Piper and Clifton Chaison, Rockland; Henry Cheney, Pembroke; Charles Brooks and Tony George, Barnstable; and, Henry MacPherson, Bridgewater.
… October 1, 1934 …Meeting called to order at 8:20 p.m. by Commander Dunham with 29 members present. The Adjutant inspected the cards of members. Outstanding bills to be paid are taxes $211.80 and coal bills for the coming winter $240.00. Comrade Freeman Taylor was appointed to inquire about purchasing Colors and a Squadron Flag for the Son’s of the Legion and the sum not to exceed $20.00. Also, it was voted, that the Post buy a flag for its own use, the cost not to be more than $10.00. Joseph Dutra reported on the Armistice Day Celebration to be held November 12.
… November 5, 1934 … Nine members of our Son’s of the Legion were present to witness the presentation of the Colors and Squadron Flags to Squadron 64. Also present were 10 members from our Auxiliary led by Mrs. Amelia Fuller, President. Captain Edgar Gagnon of the Son’s accepted the Flag of our Country and the Squadron Colors. The Flag was a gift of the Post, while the Squadron Colors were a gift of the Auxiliary. Hats for the Son’s were offered to its members. Armistice Day activities were reported. Under unfinished business a bill from C.A. Sherman was cussed and discussed. A motion passed that we pay the sum of $11.20 and amended that we add “IN FULL TO DATE.”
…. December 3, 1934 … Report on Armistice Day Celebration was given by Chairman Allen MacDonald. Past Commander Millette reported that the Armistice Dance made a net profit of $51.15. It was voted that Comrade Cole investigate the costs to have Smedley Butler appear in this town. Legion Medals are to be given to students named by the faculties. Finance officer reported $413.36 in the treasury. Voted to appropriate $25.00 to the Son’s of the Legion. The Athletic Officer to enter a baseball team in the Twilight League and $25.00 was voted for the team. A committee of ten to report on the advisability of holding a minstrel show in the Spring was appointed by the Commander. Respectfully submitted, Everett L. Saunders, Adjutant.
