January 4, 1932:- Thirty-seven members were called to order by Commander Dunham at 8:15 p.m. The cast of the recent Legion show, it was voted, be entertained at Finn’s Sea Grill at $.75 per plate. Voted that a letter be sent to Middlebury Post #27 A.L. Middlebury ,Vt expressing our thanks and appreciation in the interest they have shown toward making Comrade E.E. Place, Commander of the local G.A.R. stay in Vermont a pleasant one. … February 1, 1932 … A communication from the Bridgewater Flying Corps was read and it was voted that the Commander of that organization be given an opportunity to speak to the Post at the March meeting. It was voted that the four officers delegated to the National Commander’s Reception and dinner (see photo) at the expense of the Post be the Commander, 1st Vice-Commander, Adjutant and Finance Officer. A vote to contribute the sum of $10.00 to the War Memorial sometime within the next ninety days was made. It was voted that the Adjutant write a letter of thanks to Mr. Arthur Tripp for granting the use of his window for the flag display. With 42 members present the meeting adjourned at 10:30 p.m….submitted by Adjutant Leslie G. Maranville. … March 7, 1932 … Only 15 members were present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and reports were heard from the officers of the service, welfare, child welfare, public speaker committees and finance officer. Progress was the report of the Chairman of the Employment campaign. Voted the Post enter a baseball team in the Middleboro twilight league and that $25 be appropriated for same. … April 4, 1932 … The Post would conduct a special meeting April 18, in co-operation with National Headquarters coast to coast radio broadcast. It was voted also to invite the Auxiliary to attend, it being on their meeting night. It was voted that a committee of seven consisting of McNeece, McCrillis, Bryden, F. E. Thomas, Cole, Diotte and Geo. I. Dunham draw up a resolution requesting immediate payment of the balance due on the Adjusted Service Certificate be sent to our Congressmen and Senators. The resolution reads: “In view of the fact that Congress has seen fit to loan two billion dollars to the banks and railroads; the Simeon L. Nickerson Post 64 of the American Legion, comprising 175 members, wishes to go on record as being in favor of the immediate payment of the balance due on the Adjusted Compensation Certificate.” … May 2, 1932 … Regular meeting called to order with 30 members led by Commander Dunham. Contributions of $5.00 each were voted to the District Nursing Assoc., Salvation Army and Y.M.C.A. A nominating committee of seven were elected to present a list of nominees for various Post offices. Upon motion it was voted to authorize the carnival committee the privilege of granting the Auxiliary the refreshment concession. Voted the VFW be granted permission to place a wreath on the marker at John Glass, Jr., Square. Telegrams were voted to be sent to Congressman Gifford and letters to Senators Coolidge and Walsh requesting that they oppose all efforts to pass any bill that would in any way reduce benefits to the disable veterans as part of the so called omnibus bill. … June 6, 1932 … Thirty –five members and two visitors called to order. Two visiting comrades from Post #1 of New Bedford were permitted to speak regarding their barbecue and field day that they are conducting at Camp Joe Hooker. Upon motion it was voted to proceed with the election of officers. Elected were Everett Saunders, Commander; Norman Bryden, 1st vice Commander; Romeo Millette, 2nd vice Commander; George E. Dunham, 3rd vice Commander; Leslie Maranville, Adjutant; Forest E. Thomas, Finance Officer; Carl G. Kendall, Chaplain; Louis Cole, Historian; and Clarence E. Curtis, Sgt. At Arms. … July 11, 1932 … The meeting opened with an invocation by the Chaplain. Comrade Bryden, Drum Major for the Drum and Bugle Corps, turned over to the Finance Officer $10.00 being the earnings of the corps at July 4th. At the same reporting the corps’ standing in the competition on July 2. Voted that if the Posts’ funds are sufficient at the time of the delegates departure for the convention, the Finance Officer be allowed to authorize them the necessary sum of money for their expenses. A rising vote of thanks was tendered the manager and players of the Legion Baseball team for defeating the Middleboro Fish & Game Assoc. … August 1, 1932 … With 28 members present Commander Dunham called the meeting to order. Postmaster Farrington invited the Post to the laying of the corner stone of the Federal Building. Three members were appointed to work in conjunction with the Auxiliary in connection with their picnic. Appointed were Chas. Carver, Norman Bryden and Walter Campbell. The Adjutant was to send a letter to the Commander of the Oak Bluffs Post expressing appreciation for the treatment given members on their recent trip to the Island. Voted that the $1.00 bank balance of last year’s Show Committee be transferred to the incoming Show Committee. … September 12, 1932 … Upon motion it was voted to elect Comrade Edward E. Place (Commander of E.W. Pierce Post #8 G.A.R.) an Honorary Commander of this Post. Vice-Commander Bryden, as manager of the baseball team, presented to the Post the bronze trophy won by them as CHAMPIONS OF THE 1932 TWILIGHT LEAGUE. It was also voted that Bryden be authorized to entertain members of the baseball team. Installation of Officers. Installing officer, Comrade Bartlett Cushing of Post 220 Wareham. Following the installation Commander Place of the G.A.R., Mr. Wilcox, Sons of Veterans, Mrs. Marjorie Bryden of the Auxiliary, and Herbert Bean Commander of the V.F.W. were introduced and remarks were given. … October 3, 1932 …Comrade Buckley gave a speech relative to the activities of the Economy League. Notification was made of the $50.00 presented by the Auxiliary, same to be used for payment on the taxes and coal bills. Athletic Officer Bryden asked to permission to form a basketball team in the YMCA League with Chas. Carver as manager, as well as a bowling team with Frederick Fies as manager. Comrade William Smith gave the Post quite a review regarding his trip to the National Convention in Portland, Oregon. …November 7, 1932 … Commander Saunders called the meeting to order with 25 present. Heard reports from all committees. A communication from the National Economy League was replied in the following manner: “We cannot subscribe to the aims of the Economy League until such time as the League has some definite plan to reduce all other items of Government expenditures as well as those of Veterans. Also, until the Veterans Bureau has some adequate and positive means of determining service connection in fact.” Voted that committee to determine the advisability of obtaining speakers for the purpose of acquainting the other organizations in Town of the Veterans viewpoint regarding the National Economy League. … December 5, 1932 … An invite to attend the Cabot Club lecture relative to the National Economy League was declined. A committee was formed to conduct locally a campaign in opposition to the National Economy League. Voted that the Welfare Officer be allowed $1.00 to present Comrade Maltais smokes or some other suitable remembrance as he just returned from the hospital. Discussion on need of roof repairs.
