EDWARD ELMER RAMSDELL who was killed on 9 October, 1918 in the Argonne Forest of France while serving as a cook. He was a United States Army Private in Co. K and in the 39th. infantry of the 4th. Division. HENRY ALLEN ROGERS who died in a Japanese Prison camp in the Philippines on 20 Nov. 1942. He was a Private serving in the United States Air Force.

REV. GRUBE BURDETTE CORNISH, (First Post Commander of Ramsdell Post), was a pastor at the Methodist Episcopal church in York Village, Me. On 18 Feb. of 1918 He was commissioned Chaplain and assigned to the fifth division, trains & Headquarters.He served oversea from Apr. 1918 to July 1919. From 1920 to 1935 he served in the 103rd. Infantry of the Maine National Guard as a Chaplain. FRANCIS R. MORSE Served as 2nd Post Commander of Ramsdell American Legion Post no. 56. REV. WALTER HAROLD MILLINGER served as Commander in 1930. He was the Pastor of the First Parish Church form 1929 to 1952. DOC. DAVID HARRIMAN served as Post Commander in 1943. He also served as York's Civil Defense Leader and organized the Aircraft Warning Service. DANIEL T. BAGLEY served as Post Commander in 1944-45. CAPT. WILLIAM P. HANCOCK, (Maine State Police), served as Post Commander in 1947. GRACE SMITH, was a yeoman 1/C USCGR stationed in Boston, Ma. She and Iris Ellis are velieved to the first WWII servicewoman to join a service organization in the Portsmouth, NH. area. IRIS ELLIS, was a Seaman 1/C USNRW and the daughter of Past Post Commander Lawrence Ellis. She was very active with the youth of the group coordinating the majorettes. She became the first woman Post Commander of Ramsdell Rogers American Legion Post no. 56 in 1977. EDWARD A. BRAGDON, (knows as Ted) served as Post Commander in 1954.

Legionnaire Chris Cassidy takes his ID to space

U. S. Navy Commander, Astronaut, and Post 56 Legionnaire brought his ID card to the International Space Station in 1983.  He donated his ID card to the post with a certificate of authencitly and some pictures of his space experiance which included 166 days in orbit.

The Bardsley Brothers

The Bardsley Brothers

Theodore, (Heck) Bardsley is currently a member of Post 56, but during WWII; he and his 7 brothers served in WWII. Military historians verify that the Bardsley's were the highest number of family members to serve in the military at any one time. The brothers served a combined 338 months and earned 28 medals in total which includes two purple hearts.

In the late 1940's; they joined American Legion Post 156 in Waltham, Ma. This picture..

Military mural at post 56 painted by York High School Students

May 28, 2018

Students from York, Me. High School painted this mural to honor our military services. It ws dedicated on 28 May 2018. Students were later given "Letters of Appreciation" by the post. The project represents our commitment to our military, and involvement with the community.
