Nine De La Salle students attend American Legion-sponsored Boys and Girls State. While most students relax during the summer, nine De La Salle students spent a sleepless week, learning Civics first-hand as they attended Boys and Girls State at Northwestern Louisiana Universty. The boys were sponsored by Ed Brauner American Legion Post 307, the girls by theEd Brauner American Legion Auxiliary. Those girls who participated included Leah Kennedy who served as State Party Chairwoman, then became Senate President, Dulcé Rivera, who was a Judicial Aide for Amite Parish, and Marigny Heller who was on the Tchefuncte Parish School Board. Leah said, “I loved meeting new people and how to better communicate with them.” Dulcé said, “I’m grateful forthe opportunity; it has given me more confidence.” Marigny added, “Girls State was a once in a lifetime experience for me; I can’t wait to apply as a Counselor for next year.” Six boys attended Boys State. Wyatt Burch-Celentano was elected Pearl Parish’s District Attorney. He said, “I enjoyed every day. I have a better understanding of our system of government, and that’s so important. Robert Hudson was elected to the Pointe Coupee City Council, and was appointed to Sabine Parish Emergency Manager. “I loved every part of Boys State,” Robert said. “I learned how to work with others efficiently, and that this was an amazing experience.” Eric Lorio was a Pearl Parish member of the House of Representatives. “I learned about our government and how it is run,” he said, “and I learned not to be shy.” Drake Troxclair was a Lafourche City Judge. “I learned a lot about the judicial system,”he said, “and it was a good experience.” Branden Durkee was elected to the Atchafalaya Parish Senate. “This was the greatest experience I’ve had,” he said; “and I realized I’ll never forget thisexperience.” Peyton Preston, was Mississippi Parish Sheriff. “I was initially apprehensive,” he said, “but I really enjoyed the experience, and I learned more about being a leader.” Ed Brauner Post Representative Jimmy Pilet, himself a DLS graduate, said, “The past several years, we of the Post, have been so pleased with the De La Salle participants that this year we offered to send two more boys, and seeing their responses, we know it was a good investment.”
