Seven De La Salle students attend American Legion-sponsored Boys State. Press Release from De La Salle High School: 2017,seven male De La Salle students experienced the American Legion-sponsored BoysState program. They were sponsored by the Ed Brauner Post 307. Attendees included, alphabetically, DLS Student Council President Ben Calico, Jack Dugas, Gustavo De Paiva, Connor Finney, Fynn LaBreche, Christopher Towell, and Hunter Wainwright. The boys represented many aspects of De La Salle ranging from Student Council, Band, String Orchestra, Soccer, and Football. Ben Calico, who was a Public Defender for his city, modestly said he “never lost a case. Ben said of the experience, “It showed us how to take responsibilities and the possible reprecussions of our actions. Jack Dugas became the Fire Chief of his city. He said of the experience, “It taught me that I can help make our government better. My time there will never be forgotten.” For Gustavo De Paiva, the “experience was life-changing.” Elected a Senator for his parish, Gustavo said “I learned the ins and outs of democracy and the importance of voting.” He added, “I would like to return as a counselor because I want to provide future leaders the opportunity to expand their potential.” Musician Connor Finney served as a city Clerk. He said, “It taught me about making alliances, and to use my spirit that Boys State inspired in me to be a learder.” Bringing his experience as a German-born American citzen to Boys State, Fynn La Breche was elected to his parish’s House of Representatives. Fynn said, “It was a lot of fun and a great experience. I learned many leadership skills that will be helpful in the future.” Joining his soccer teammate in the House of Representatives, Christopher Towell also became a Party Platform Committeeman. Christopher said, “I learned how important government is in everyday life. I am taking leadership skills from Boys State.” Hunter Wainwright said he was City Defense Attorney. “I was very nervous at first because it was something I’d never done before, but after, I felt very comfortable. I learned more about working with others and being open to different ideas.” All seven of the boys said they were grateful to the Post for sponsoring them and they would encourage the current juniors to participate in the future if given the opportunity.
