James Lawrence (Jim) Godshall was born May 25, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He started military training early attending Culver Military Academy from 1956-1960. He attended Valparaiso University 1960-1964; graduating with a BA in Business Administration. He also attended University of Wisconsin during the summers of 1962 and 1963.

He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve for 3 years during the Vietnam War as a Field Medical Administrative Assistant. He served in San Antonio, Texas; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Fort Sheridan, Illinois and 575th Gen Med Disp., Nha Trang Vietnam.

Following his military service, he worked in Medical Administration and Credit & Collection.
Jim served as the 78th Commander of Post 43for a two year term, 2008-2010.
