Naperville American Legion Post 43 presented their first Citizen of the Year award in 1976. It became an annual award in 1986. The Naperville Community is blessed with many people who serve their fellow citizens. Those selected must be Naperville residents whose service was performed in a volunteer capacity, rather than as part of compensated employment.

In 1987 Jerry Lindell was named Citizen of the Year. Jerry served in the U.S. Army from 1952 - 1955 in Korea. He taught at Naperville Central H.S where he was the Technical Arts Design Department Chairman. He was active on The Northwest Civil Defense Council, the Naperville Teacher's Association, served on the Naperville Young Life committee for over 7 years and was a life Member of the American Legion.
