The Drum & Bugle Corps, organized in 1929 began with fifes instead of bugles! The bugles were purchased four months later with proceeds from the 1929 Fall Festival. The Corps raised money for snappy Marine corps dress blues by sponsorship of several projects, among them, newspaper collections, ticketed entertainment and a circus. Many citizens made cash contributions. During the Corps first six years it entered 55 prize contests and took first place in 16 of them., finsihed second in 13, theird in 12 and fourth in 6 contests. The group travelled 6,750 miles to earn $3,632.50. They played before approximately 2,234,000 people. They went on to make many courtesy appearances, giving concerts, drill exhibitions and appeared several times at the 1933 Worlds Fair in Chicago.
