Smyrna Post 160 and Marietta Post 29 will be joint sponsors for a weekend American Legion Tournament in Ward Park, in Smyrna, starting Friday, and continuing through Sunday. Four teams are entered in the double elimination event, which has been named the God and Country Tournament.
Smyrna’s Bill Miles, who was recently elected commander of Post 160 said the tournament is designed to “officially to kick-off the 1971 American Legion Baseball season.”
Marietta Post 29 will open the tournament Friday evening at 6 p.m., meeting Calhoun with Smyrna Post 160 playing Monroe American Legion at 8:30.
Three games will be played Saturday, starting at 2 p.m., when Friday’s night two losers clash. The two winners will meet at 5 p.m., with the winner of the first games of the day, meeting the loser of the second game at 8 p.m.
The Championship Game will be played Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. If the unbeaten team loses in this one, a second game will be played at 5 p.m.
Miles also announced the American Legion Area Tournament will be played July 30 through August 2, the site yet to be determined.
As Post commander, Miles will step down as team manager, and relegate the position to his coach, Robert Anderson, who is athletic director for the Smyrna Post. Miles will coach and will be joined by David Bragg of South Cobb. Jimmy Nestlehut has been named senior bat boy for the team.
