Post 29’s veteran southpaw, Charles Schwartz, came up with one of the best hurling performances of the past two seasons Thursday night, notching a two-hitter against Post 185 of Athens in the Marietta’s post second baseball outing.
Schwartz picked up a 4-2 victory over the visitors, striking out 12 batters and contributing a ringing double to aid the run-making.
The chunky left-hander ran into a jam in the ninth inning after two batters had been retired, and Post 29 coach Harry Lockhart whistled in right-hander Ronnie Prince to pitch the final one-third inning. Prince responded by retiring the next batter.
Marietta lashed out seven hits in picking up four runs, the blows being evenly divided and timely.
The win was a big one for Post 29, which had lost its first game of the season the night before in an eleven-inning match with Post 160 of Smyrna.
Post 29 will be back in action again Friday night at Larry Bell Park hosting Rome Post 5, starting 8 o’clock. The Rome team is expected to be a tough contender, since it has already bid for, and has been accepted, to the state American Legion tournament in July.
The Marietta Post team will take next week off before resuming its season schedule. Coach Harry Lockhart will be out of town for the week, but the team will reopen its slate Saturday, June 20, visiting Gadsden (Ala.) Post 231 for the first of a two-game series.
One American Legion contest is scheduled for Saturday night in Ward Park , Smyrna Post 160 taking on the Dallas Legion entry in an area contest.
