Marietta’s City Council has endorsed an American Legion proposal to extend the Marietta National Cemetery to Kennesaw Mountain.
Edwin Dwyer, Commander of one of the city’s Legion posts, told council Wednesday that less than 300 lots remain in the present national cemetery and the cemetery would have to be closed by the end of the year.
The Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park site would open-up another eight acres for grave sites, Dyer said.
“We want to have the endorsement of every city and county in the 7th (Congressional) District,” Dwyer said. HE is asking for endorsements at the request of Georgia’s director of veteran affairs, Pete Wheeler.
Kennesaw Park officials said that relinquishing part of the park for national cemetery park use would not be feasible.
“Every foot of the park is needed,” said Frank Pridemore, acting park superintendent. The section being considered for grave sites is part of our nature trails.”
