Legion Birthday Cake is Cut By Commander Purcell and Mrs. Fred Thompson (Rod Barrie Photo)
Horace Orr American Legion Post 29 celebrated its 41st birthday at a joint meeting with the Auxiliary Unit which was obnserving its 40th birthday. Mrs. Fred Thompson, unit president presented a cake to the Legion and reviewed Post activities as Mrs. V. P. Mitcham, department president lighted 41 candles.
Jimmy Powers, national executive committeeman, was the principal speaker. Introduced by George Osborne, program chairman, Powers spoke on the subject "For God and Country". Mrs Mitcham commended the post on its growth and accomplishments.
Following the buffet dinner, Commander Perry Purcell recognized the following past commanders present: Mayes Ward, G. C. Fennel Sr., R. A. Wheeler, John Roy, C. D. Copeland, Fred Thompson and George Osborne. Past presidents of the Auxiliary attending were Mrs. G. C. Fennell Sr., Mrs. John Roy, Mrs. Robert Boyd, Mrs. C. D. Copeland and Mrs. Edward Krebs.
Special guests for the occasion were Mrs. Mitchan, of McDonough; Mrs. C. T. Hovis, Auxiliary Department past president parley chairman, of Atlanta; Mrs. David Turner, department second vice-president, of Cartersville; Mrs. O. B. Cawthon Sr., department historian, of Atlanta; Mrs. Bill Pitts, of McDonough; C. D. Copeland, seventh district commander; Fred Thompson, seventh district senior vice-commander; Herbert McCollum, Russell Ford Sr., Albert Henderson, Sam Welsch, E .R. Sanders and Troy Adair.
Charter members given recognitiuon were Luther Burton and Mayes Ward.
A musical program was presented by Sybil Grace at the piano with vocalists Virginia Dorman, Judy Roberts and Kenny Hildebrand.
The celebration was attended by 150 Legion and Auxiliary members and guests.
