A letter of commendation for outstanding work in bringing veterans into the American Legion has come to the Horace Orr Legion Post 29 from the state membership chairman, John Brock, of Adairsville.
The communication received by the local Legion Commander John C. Roy pointed out that the 1950 membership is already above the total number for 1949, with several months remaining in the 1950 Legion year. The Post now has 684 members for 1950. There were 613 veterans on the Post roll in 1949.
"This increase in membership for your Post thus far this year shows a growing awareness on the part of veterans in the Legion's programs of rehabilitation, child welfare, Americanism, National security, community service, and other activities," Brock emphasized.
The membership chairman, who is also state senior vice-commander, reminded the local Post that the Legion needs a bigger role than it has ever had before if it is to carry out the national, state, and local programs that have been outlined.
He singled out for special mention the move of the state organization to have hundreds of empty beds at the Dublin VA Hospital put into use and the national Legion drive to bring about defeat of the veterans affairs section of the Hoover Commission Report, which part has been described by the Legion as an attempt to "dismember" the Veterans Administration and destroy or seriously impair all major veterans' services and benefits.
