This "shot" was made in January when Legionnaires broke ground for the home which will be opend formally on Saturday, April 23, 1949. VA Chaplain Dow Heard has the shovel and L. A. Van Woeart the pick.

Ground for Marietta's opulent new Legion home, "Best in Georgia's Northwest," was broken January 10 of this year in spring like weather, Chaplain Dow Heard and Leon Van Woeart gouging out the first scoopfuls of earth.
The home is situated on a knoll just west of the old NYA installations on the north side of Roswell Street.
Officiating at the ground breaking ceremonies besides Heard and Van Woert were members of the building committee, John Heck, Bill Little, and Clyde Brown; finance committeemen A. D. Little and Rogers Wheeler, and Legionnaire John Pope.
Commander "Chuck" Ward was unable to attend, being out of town on business.
