Charles E. "Chuck" Ward amputee veteran of World War II and recruit chairman for the recent Red Cross "blood bank," will head Horace Orr Post 29 American Legion, following his unanimous election Tuesday night to succeed Horace Bagwell.
Besides the election of officers, the post made plans for entertainment and other activities to be carried out in the near future.
Elected to the officers' slate to assist commander-elect Ward during the coming year were Russ Mills, senior vice-commander; Arthur L. Poor, junior vice-commander; Rogers Wheeler, finance officer; John Pope, sergeant-at-arms; mthe Rev. J. A. Gray, chaplain; and Fred Morris, historian. Chosen to replace retiring members of the building committee were Commander-elect Ward, William D. Little, and John A. Heck.
The new officers will be installed at a special program during June. The nominating committee was composed of Chairman Clyde Brown, L. M. Atherton and A. D. Little.
Calling for closer co-operation between officers, committeemen, and members, Ward stated his main objective for the year, erection of an American Legion home here. Three Legionnaires, Comrades Kruger, Bagwell, and Muehiendorff, agreed to support the new home by furnishing a brass Legion plate, paint, and construction plans. In offering their co-operation, they called on all other members to donate their servcies in whatever field they were best qualified.
The 50 members present unanimously endorsed a motion to petition the mayor and council to change the name of Roswell street to Memorial drive. This movement had been backed by Marietta beautification committee. The post also unanimously went on record in support of the "housing for veterans" bill now before Congress.
The group voted to appropriate the same amount as last year for sending two boys from Cobb county to Boys State held at GMA. James Upshaw was appointed chairman, with Clyde Maxwell, and Lyman Hall, committee, for working out details, and arranging the selection of two boys for the honor. The post decided to continue the entertainment program instituted last week each Friday at 8 p.m. in Larry Bell auditorium until further notice.
