Prominent Mariettans Took Charge of Legion's $50,000 Building Fund
A charter for the Horace Orr Legion Post's new $50,000 home was granted in September, 1947 by order of Judge J. H. Hawkins.
Incorporation under the name "The Legion Home of Marietta," was ssought by A. E. McCleskey, Clyde Brown, Lucius Atherton, J. S. Read, R. J. Hancock, Rogers Wheeler, Luther C. Hames Jr., and Horace Bagwell, post commander in 1947. The group acted as a board of trustees duly elected to handle the building fund.
The charter provided that there was to be no capital stock and that the purpose of the incorporation was to purchase, erect, equip, and maintain a Legion home to provide a suitable place for meetings and entertainment.
Under the charter the Legion was empowered to rent or lease a portion of its properties, the money to be used for the benefit of Legionnaires.
It also provided that the post could hold fairs, expositions, circuses and carnivals to raise funds for completion of its building and maintenance after completion.
Term for which the petitioners asked to be incorporated was 20 years, with privilege of renewal at expiration of that period.
Control of the company was to be retained by the local post through a requirement that the post must sanction the by-laws of the company and any changes thereafter.
Court officials passed up their usual fees in putting through the charter and the form of Dorsey-Hames represented the Legion without compensation.
