James Upshaw, World War II veteran, was elected Post Commander of the Horace Orr Post No. 29 of the American Legion at a meeting Tuesday night in the courthouse.
Three nominees withdrew from the race leaving Upshaw and William Hardy as contestants. Upshaw was elected and his election was made unaminous.
Upshaw served in the Army for almost 5 years. He entered upon active duty wit hthe National Guard from this country and served in Germany. When he was released from active duty, he was a first lieutenant.
Commander Upshaw is 31 years old, married, and has one child. He is employed by the Diamond Jewelry company.
In a brief speech to the Horace Orr Post, Upshaw pledged his best efforts to his comrades and asked them to help him make Horace Orr Post No. 29 the best post in Georgia.
Clyde Maxwell was nominated, elected third vice-commander after the elevation of Upshaw to post commander.
Tom Austin was introduced to the post as the new state Veteran Service officer. He stated that the state Veteran Service office would open about July 22.
Reports wre made by the delegates to the state Legion convention, recently held in Savannah.
