Commander A. E. McCleskey, of the Horace Orr Post, American Legion, is in receipt of a letter today from Logan H. Kelley, state commander, stating that the Georgia department of the legion has a total membership of 12, 200 "the greatest in the history of our department."
The state leader cited that Georgia lead the 1939 advance membership drive into the new year by achieving on January 1 the greatest enrollment for the fourth consecutive year, setting the pace for all other American Legion departments.
In addition, the Georgia department won three out of four trophies awarded by the national department this year, the commander revealed.
Commander Kelley expressed appreciation in the letter for "the splendid cooperation that you and your post have given the department this year," and urged that the membership increase continue, in order that Georgia legioinnaires may lead the parade in Chicago at the national conventionon on September 25-28, 1939.
Goal of 1,000 additional members was set by the Georgia Commander.
Commander McCleskey revealed that the Horace Orr post now has the largest membership since 1924, with a total of 104 on the rolls.
