Saturday, May 11 the Post Riders took part in the 9th annual Clyde Lassen Poker Run. All proceeds went to benefit the Lassen Veterans Home. Along with me were Ron Brown and Herb Bennett. LTjg Lassen was a Navy helo pilot who in June 1968 was called upon to launch his single engine, under-powered aircraft from the deck of the USS Preble (DLG-15). His mission was to fly over the North and rescue two downed pilots. After an extended search over hostile territory, and with darkness approaching, LTjg Lassen turned on his search light in order to avoid the terrain. The NVA in the intervening time also surrounded the two pilots and opened fire when they saw the light. LTjg Lassen refused to be deterred and pulled the men aboard. Once they were in the aircraft LTjg Lassen began his return. He eluded two SAMS fired at him and landed with approximately 5 minutes of fuel remaining. One has to wonder, what kind of country produces such men as LTjg Lassen and his crew? Men who unhesitatingly risk all for one of their own. It seems that every older generation casts doubt on the newer one. Do you remember Elvis and later the Rolling Stones? American has been blessed with those 1-2% in every generation who are willing to wear the uniform and serve. It turns out that LTjg Lassen and his crew are not unique in America. We have only to look around and see the many law enforcement officers and the first responder fire fighters. They are joined by a myriad of generous Americans who daily support the values and heritage we hold dear by providing for virtually anyone who needs help. Collectively these are the people that make America great. With the exception of the fools who refuse to secure our border and those who continue to kneel for the National Anthem, America remains a beacon of strength and hope around the world. LTjg Lassen has a Veterans Nursing Home in St. Augustine, VFW Post 10178 in Englewood, Fl, and the USS Lassen (DDG-82) named in his honor. God Bless America
