The flag of the United States of America which hangs in the foyer of American Legion Smyrna Post 160 was the first flag to fly over the new Post Home.

The flag was requested through U.S. Senator Johnny Isakason's office by Peter and Jill O'Brien Thiel. It was flown over our Nation's Capitol on July 4, 2008.

In honor of both their father's service, it was presented to the American Legion Smyyrna Post 160
Family on November 11, 2008 during the first Veterans Day Ceremony held in the newly expanded Brinkley Park.

At that time, the Post Home was still under construction and the flag was hoisted into place and was flown in front of the Post on a makeshift flagpole.

From a position near where the present paver-lined courtyard is located, a bugler sounded Taps while the flag flew for the first and only time over the Post Home. At the end of the day, the flag was lowered, folded, and placed into retirement.

The flag was taken out of retirement and was placed on permanent display in its present location just prior to Veterans Day, November 11, 2010.
