In the summer of 2015, a small group of veterans met at the Li Thong Hotel in Ubon Thailand

with the intent of forming a VFW post. There were VFW posts already established In Thailand

so we thought it would be a relatively easy thing to do.

We soon found out that the requirements to join the VFW were quite stringent. We had the

veterans but not all were in the military at the time frame required for the VFW or were in an

area of combat. The discussion soon got around to the American Legion. With them we could

get around the restrictions of VFW membership.

After gathering the required number of members, we formed a committee to write our

constitution and by-laws.

We received our temporary charter on 20 October 2015. We received our permanent charter

on 31 July 2016.

We did not or do not now own our own building. We probably never will. We cannot own

property here in Thailand. Finding a place to hold out meetings was a priority. The Li Thong was

nice, but it was expensive. We did not have a large budget. From the Li Thong we moved to a

place called Tom’s American Restaurant. It was spacious but being able to use it when we

wanted wasn’t always possible. From there we met a few times at another restaurant in

downtown Ubon. That also proved to not good for us. Our fourth location was at the golf

course on the base (Ubon RTAFB) That was a good location, but some members were having a

difficult time gaining entrance to the base. Our final location is now at the golf driving range

located on the base but accessible to everyone. The facilities are good with a restaurant,

meeting room and you can also hit golf balls after the meeting.
