The American Legion Symphonic Band is sponsored by the Florida Ninth District of the American Legion, which comprises the entirety of Broward County. With over 65 professional and amateur musicians who volunteer their time and talents, the band provides live music for enjoyment throughout the tri-county Area (Broward, Palm Beach and Miami- Dade). The band currently rehearses at American Legion Post 142 in Pompano Beach every Wednesday night from mid-August through July 4th. It also has within it, a 17 member jazz/swing band, called “Nostalgia”. Both of these organizations have performed at various venues including the Skolnick Center at Palm-Aire, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, St. Gabriel Catholic Church,The Town Center Club at Bonaventure, John Knox village, The State Veterans Home, The City of Fort Lauderdale's Annual "Light Up The Beach" and their Fourth of July Celebration. The band also provides music for a 9/11 Memorial event sponsored by the 9th District as well as multiple Memorial Day concerts and an annual benefit concert on Veteran's Day in support of "America's Moms For Soldiers". The band was founded in January 2004 by Arthur Tenny, a veteran of Viet Nam and a member of American Legion Post 142. Art and a number of other charter members had been associated for years with the bands of Dr. Robert M. Lacey, who, up until his death in 2004, had been serving the Deerfield and Pompano Beach communities with live community band music. The desire of Mr. Tenny, in forming this new organization, was to continue the tradition of live concert band music in the south Florida area, and at the same time, honor all of our veterans, as well as, those who are serving so nobly as members of our armed forces. The American Legion Symphonic Band is one of only a a few community concert bands in South Florida and is the only American Legion affiliated band in the State of Florida.
